Bougainvillea Plant
Common Name: Bougainvillea
Botanical Name: Bougainvillea Glabra
Also Known as:
- Paper Flower
- Bougainvillea
- Bougainvillea Glabra
Bougainvillea Glabra plant is a perennial and an evergreen vine shrub.
Paperflower has climbing shrubs with thick, thorny stems and drooping branches that have a smooth surface or are sparsely hairy.
Bougainvillea is often grown as an annual or container plant. The actual flowers are small and bright, it is the colorful bracts, or modified leaves, which can be seen in all shades of orange, pink, purple, and white that attract attention.
Water the plant until liquid drips through the drainage hole, and then don’t water again until the potting mixture feels slightly dry. Allow the top 2 inches (5 cm) of soil to dry out between watering, empty drainage tray to prevent soggy soil, which can lead to root rot.
However, don’t allow the soil to become completely dry because a water-stressed plant won’t bloom many flowers. Water the plant immediately if it looks wilted.
Once established, they are drought resistant. It is a woody climber with curved thorns that sprawls and needs to be tied or have a structure such as a fence, wall, or pergola for support.
Paperflowers are quintessential tropical vines, known for their drought-tolerance and lavishly brilliant flowers. They originate from tropical South and Central America, where they’re called paper flowers. Bougainvilleas are rapid growers, flowering all-year-round in the tropics and subtropics.
Give it at least 4 hours of direct sun each day. Bougies won’t bloom without enough light. Water thoroughly, and then allow the top 2 inches (5 cm) of soil to dry out between watering, empty drainage tray to prevent soggy soil, which can lead to root rot. Overwatering will cause leaves to turn yellow and fall off.
It likes high humidity during the growing season, spring through fall. It’s a good idea to use a cool-mist room humidifier. Average to warm temperatures 60-80°F/16-27°C, Bougainvillea plants are frost-tender. But it doesn’t like the cold at all.
Bougainvillea grows well in an all-purpose potting mix. Feed the plant with a liquid fertilizer designed for flowering plants, and apply it about three times during the growing season.
Paperflowers bloom on new growth. This means you can prune the plant as needed to maintain the desired size. The ideal time to trim the plant is immediately following a flush of blooms.
Bougainvillea is perhaps the most popular and one of the most widely grown tropical vines. These vines can attain a height of 15 to 20 feet and spread of 15-40 feet and contain thorns. It is a Moderate grower with a full growth habit. Bougainvillea is suitable for the bush, trellis, standard, and hanging baskets.
