An evergreen rhizomatous perennial plant.

Prayer Plant is a great air purifying plant.

An evergreen tropical plant commonly grown as a houseplant in temperate climates, The Prayer Plant has variegated ovate leaves with entire margins that fold at night to resemble praying hands.  The undersides of the leaves are gray-green to purple-green. New leaves appear as a rolled tube.

Whether you’re just starting out with houseplants or an expert grower, the prayer plant is an excellent choice.

Prayer plant filters airborne toxins from home or office. They’re great in hanging baskets as they spread low and wide.

Never set your plant in direct sunlight because the sun will scorch the plant’s leaves or the leaves will develop blotches or patches and fade in color intensity. The plant is generally tolerant of lower light areas.

This plant prefers acidic soil. Use a peat-based potting mix with a pH of 5.5 to 6.0  or mix two parts sphagnum peat moss, one part loamy soil, and one part perlite or coarse sand together.

You can also use a general-purpose houseplant potting soil provided it is well-draining.

During the growing season, water frequently and never allows the potting soil to dry out. Water the prayer plant when the top of the potting soil is just starting to become dry.

A prayer plant prefers normal household temperatures between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit (15-27 degrees Celsius). Lower temperatures can damage the leaves. Prayer plants prefer a very humid environment and the humidity in homes is often too low. To increase humidity, mist the leaves with room temperature or warm water.

Fertilize your prayer plant every two weeks from early spring through fall. Dilute a balanced, water-soluble houseplant fertilizer (10-10-10) to half strength. Reduce fertilizing to once a month or so in the winter.

You should not need to re-pot your prayer plant often. But, if it becomes root-bound or pot-bound, it will grow much slower. The best time to re-pot is in the spring before the growing season starts.

Often referred to as Prayer Plants, along with their closely related cousins Calathea, Maranta leaves have the unusual characteristic of lying flat during the day and then closing upwards at night as if in prayer.

(Flowering plants only blossom naturally in their respective seasons. Fruit bearing plants only produce fruits naturally during their growing seasons. All plants are sold in generic nursery pots, and may naturally vary in colors/sizes from the exact images illustrated above.)
