Morning Glory Plant (Ipomoea Purpurea)

Botanical Name: Ipomoea Purpurea

Also known as:

  • Tall Morning-Glory
  • Purple Morning Glory
  • Garden Morning Glory

Morning Glory Plant (Ipomoea Purpurea) is a annual Vine plant.

Morning Glory Plant (Ipomoea Purpurea) is a morning glory vine native to Mexico and Central America. Like all Morning Glories the plant entwines itself around structures with its viny stems, growing to a height of 2-3 m tall. The stems are covered with brown hairs, which is an identifying feature. Flowers grow on slender stems. They have heart-shaped leaves and are trumpet-shaped. These flowers come in a variety of colours including pink, purple, magenta, blue and white. This plant blossoms purple color but only in their season.

Not only are these flowers attractive to our eyes, but they also attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Morning glory flowers are known to perform well both as a ground covering and as a vine over a pergola or arch.

Care and Growth:

Soil: Morning glories prefer moderately fertile, well-drained soil that is kept consistently moist until the plant is well established. Adult plants aren’t as picky about their soil and can tolerate poor, dry conditions.

Light: Morning glories prefer full sun but will tolerate very light shade.

Water: Provide your morning glories with regular water, about one inch per week, and mulch around the roots to retain moisture.

Temperature: morning glories are annuals, although they can be perennial in tropical climates where temperatures don’t dip below 40-45°F.

Fertilizer: morning glories are annuals, although they can be perennial in tropical climates where temperatures don’t dip below 40-45°F.
