Bowstring Hemp (Sansevieria Zeylanica) is an evergreen perennial plant.

Bowstring Hemp (Sansevieria Zeylanica) is native to Southeast Asia, particularly to Sri Lanka and India, the plant is often confused with Snake Plant (Sansevieria Trifasciata) however, both are different species of Snake Plants, they are closely related though.

Sansevieria Zeylanica is a tough, hardy Snake Plant. The long sword-like leaves are dark green with wavy lighter green bands. They have rather a rugged, shabby-chic appearance often with rough, brown edges. Some minor leaf cracking is also common but they are just as bullet-proof and just as stunning. Easy care, shade loving, hard to kill, air-purifying, these beautiful plants have it all.

Care and Growth: 

Light: Sansevieria Zeylanica is a relatively hardy plant which enjoys conditions from full sun to light shade and is also able to adapt to low light conditions if preferred.

Watering: Allow the soil to dry out completely before watering, then water thoroughly and allow to drain freely. Do not allow the plant to sit in water as this will cause root rot.

Temperature: This Bowstring Hemp will be happy in temperatures between 15°C and 23°C. It can also tolerate temperatures as low as 10°C (but no lower) for short periods.

Humidity: The zeylanica thrives in normal household humidity. Avoid humid locations but if brown tips develop, consider occasional misting.

Feed: Apply a weak dose of cactus or general purpose feed once a month at most during the growing season. Sansevieria are low maintenance plants and don’t a lot of food.

Growth Rate: Sansevieria zeylanica is a slow-growing plant which typically reaches an ultimate height of around 75cm to 1 metre.

Toxicity: Snake plants are mildly toxic if eaten. Keep away from children and animals. Do not consume.
