Natal Plum Plant (Carissa Grandiflora)
Botanical Name: Carissa Grandiflora
Also known as:
- Common Carissa
- Amantungula
- KwaZulu
Natal Plum Plant (Carissa Grandiflora) is an outdoor broadleaf evergreen shrub.
Natal Plum Plant (Carissa Grandiflora) is a beautiful tropical shrub grown mostly as a flowering landscape specimen, but also for its small fruits, which taste like cranberries and are used in jams and jellies. Like Indian hawthorn, Natal plumb is used frequently in commercial landscapes in warmer climates, where its pretty white star-shaped flowers and fragrance are highly prized and only in their season.
Care and Growth:
Soil: Natal Plums are not picky about soil, so long as it is well-drained. In general, these plants prefer a slightly acid or neutral pH, but will tolerate slightly alkaline soil.
Light: Natal Plum plants love direct sunlight for a major part of the day. While they need at least 4 hours of sunlight every day, these plants can do well in shady conditions too.
Water: Natal Plum is a surprisingly drought tolerant shrub once established. For best performance, apply deep, regular irrigation in the summer, but irrigate on a far less regular basis during winter.
Temperature: Ideal growing temperatures range from 65°F up to 100°F (18-38°C).
Fertilizer: Use a fertilizer that has equal parts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. This will help maintain the shrub’s general health and promote fruiting.
Flowering plants only blossom naturally in their respective seasons. Fruit-bearing plants only produce fruits naturally during their growing seasons. All plants are sold in generic nursery pots, and may naturally vary in colors/sizes from the exact images illustrated above.)
