Buddha Belly Bamboo is scientifically known as Bambusa. This species is perfect for growing outdoors, or as a bonsai or indoor plant. However, one of its best advantages is its ability to adapt to a wide range of growing conditions. Buddha Belly Bamboo was named for the plant’s characteristic tendency to have bulging culms, or to ‘Belly out’. To make it Belly out, this plant needs to be stressed for water. Many people have made an art of carefully starving this bamboo to achieve maximum ‘Belly’ results.

Care and Growth: 

Bamboo can be grown in well-drained, rich potting soil. The soil should be kept moist, but not soaking.

Bamboo plants enjoy bright indirect light but can tolerate low light conditions, although they will grow more slowly.

Bamboo has some drought tolerance once it’s established, and it can handle soggy soil for a short time. However, sitting in pooled water can ultimately rot the roots and kill the plant.

Buddha Belly and Giant Buddha Belly are somewhat cold hardy, and a mature plant will be more cold-resistant than a young one. In some cases, they can survive temperatures as low as 20º F.

Fertilizer: For container-grown bamboos, we like the slow-release fertilizers supplemented with trace minerals. Should be feed regularly with a high-nitrogen food or apply any organic fertilizer
